Guide to the ancient country of Persia ~Part 5~

It is the last day in Tehran.

Another invitation from the member of my in-law's family. This time, it was the oldest brother of my father in-law. He does not speak English that much, but his wife and her daughters and grand daughters are very fluent. They have finished degree in some English spoken countries, such as USA, UK or Australia.

They live in blocks of flat near old Tehran International Airport. About 7 years ago, a new international airport was built, so their flat became very quiet (in terms of noise).

The new international airport is a bit too modern for me. I liked the previous international airport as the design is more traditional with Middle-Eastern taste. I shall write about this airport a bit later.

The menu here!
  • Split pea stew
  • Baked rainbow trout in herb
  • Gorme sabji (Herb stew with kidney beans and meat)
  • Fresh Salad
  • Saffron rice
  • Baghari Polo (rice cooked with dill and broadbeans)
  • Steamed courgettes
  • Vanilla and melon ice cream
  • Jelly (blueberry, strawberry and orange)
  • Chocolate gâteaux

Again! I ate till my tummy almost explode!!!

To use up some of the calories, we all went for a walk near by shopping centre.

There were a lot of attractive food shops in there, but we tried not to look at...
One sing I noticed was, there were not a lot of nuts (ajil) shops.

Because of the currency problem, it is not easy to export anything from Iran. Nuts are not exception. Untill the problem occurred  the best nuts were bought by Western countries expensively. However, they needs to be sold to Iranian people, as they cannot sell to Western people. So, Nut's sellers started to sell only expensive grade I  nuts on the market.

Do Iranian people can afford such expensive nuts?

Of course, Not.

So, people started stop buying nuts all together. It was a quiet resistant of Iranian people towards the government.

It was noticeable if you visit some one's house.
Customarily, there are always small bowls of nuts, dried and fresh fruits prepared for guests.

This time, the bowls of nuts was swapped by pumpkin or watermelon seeds. (They are roasted in shells and eaten like sunflower seeds eaten by Spanish people.)

No pistachios! No almonds!! No cashew nuts!!!

We thanked to the big auntie for all the welcoming. We promised to come over soon again and left.

*************************
What can help us excising was getting back home and packing all the languages.
Next day, we have to take a coach to Isfahan. Instead of giving away presents from UK, we received a lot of presents.. mainly children's toys. It was like puzzles. Kids watches us very closely as they don't want to leave any of their toys behind.

But they are so BULKY!!!

3 suits cases for 4 of us...+ a backpack for children's toy and a big jute bag to take some food for the journey.

I was glad, but had a bit of mixed feeling of carrying the big jute bag.

In the morning, mother and sister in law were getting on tidying up foods in the fridge.
The flat needs to be free from fresh food as no one will be there for at least 4 months.

After making sandwiches for 8 people, my bag became half full.
Then, mum asked me with a big smile...

"Oh, you have a big bag! Can you put these fruits in your bag? ....and these snacks...and a large bag of crisps...and...."

Yes, my bag was large enough to accommodate all the food needs to be consumed on the way, but...

It's soooooooooooo Heavy!

********************
We called two taxis to coach station in the middle of Tehran.

I knew already, but I will never used to the driving manner in Iran. I have to mention this.

Unbelievable Iranian driving skills!!!

I am sure, you would be very quiet and crouching dashboard at the passenger seat of a car...specially taxi!

Anything is fine. You can change the lane anytime. Even you can drive on top of two lanes.
If you are waiting at the roundabout, you will notice 4 cars in line waiting to get into the roundabout...although the road has only 3 lanes.

In Iran, cars drive on right side, so you have to give away to cars from left...However, you sometimes have to deal with a bike coming from right!!! Apparently, bicycles are not vehicles, so they don't need to obey the traffic rules. Really???

However, amazingly, I have never come across to a scene of accidents.

Mostly, drivers use brake a lot (I always worry about the consumption of brake pads). Drivers use horns a lot. They rev a lot, too.

However, it seems to be very peaceful. Nobody is getting angry or harassing other drivers. They seem to think...
"he drives in that way, so why not I drive in that way, too."
So, every body's rule is every body's rule.

Oh, another thing I cannot miss to mention. You will see amazing number of passengers in a car.
For example, small cars, such as Peugeot 209, are very popular.
The small car can accommodate 9 people (including a driver and 4 children).Of course, all the passengers have to ware seat belts by law. I don't imagine how the belt arrangement goes...

Well, I have seen a driver driving a car on a highway with a baby on his arm. It made me really worried, though...

************************
So you can see the reason of calling 2 taxis this time. it was not because of the number of passenger. It was because of the number of suits cases. We had 6 suits cases and 3 large bags in total. I ended up by sitting next to very dusty suits cases and 2 bags.

Although we did not know where to get off in the coach station, the kind taxi driver drove around till he found the coach we get in. What a nice guy!!!

***********************
After driving out Tehran, you could see no ending horizon. The speed limit is 110km/h. It might be the same 6 hours journey between Tokyo-Osaka, but the distance to Isfahan is much longer (as speed limit in Japan is 80 km/h).

On the map, you only moved two prefectures away. You can guess how large Iranian land is.

This is the view from the coach almost all the time.

Now, you might think why we use coach rather than air plain. Although it's very tiring journey for 80 years old in-laws and two young children.
In fact, we used to fly from Tehran to Isfahan years ago.
But, we found out a bit of worrying fact about using air plain recently.

This is also because of the currency matter.
Air line company cannot import new air plains nor parts for nearly 5 years. 5 years... it is quite long for the aviation world.)

Anyway, we can take very luxurious and comfortable journey with a bit less amount of money. We get a large reclining seats with cold drinks and snacks.  It's the first class treats!

In the middle of the journey around 2 o'clock, there are people park their cars on the side of high ways and open up picnic. Eating lunch, having tea and taking a nap. They never give up their lifestyle anytime in any circumstance. How impressive!!!

As the journey getting close to the end, rocky mountains appeared. My head started hart so much. When my headache got to the peak, we arrived at Isfahan coach station.

To be continued...

Father's Day

Yesterday was Father's Day.

I read a lot of comments on a few social networks. "We cooked a special dinner for daddy!", "I got this for the Father's day", and "I love father..."etc.etc.

I am glad people had a loooovely day.

Well, do you want to know what was our Father's Day like?

(^_^;)A.........

It started on Thursday.
My daughter got viral gastroenteritis. She was in agony, so I was there looking after my daughter on Thursday and Friday.
However, I had to take son to Japanese school on Saturdays, so I asked my husband to look after her....

Then....My husband got something nasty from my daughter.

Typical!!!

I was suffered from a bad headache, tummy pain and back pain because of PMS.

My son was the only healthy member of family and could not bear the most boring time at home.
He was not allowed to go out by himself, nor play computer games.
(After watching video on iPad for 3 hours, he was told not to go on computer for a day.)

I think he was TOO BORED. I think that's why....

He started tidy up his room...by himself!!!

I thought he'd got something wrong, but I didn't say anything. I appraised him as much as I could!

Oh, I got it. Is this a kind of present for Daddy's Day?

If so, please can I have this on Mummy's day, too? ww

*************************

We thought my daughter had recovered on Saturday, but her condition got worse on Sunday morning. She had really bad tummy ache and ask me to rub her tummy all the time.

It was tiring. I fell a sleep several times, and she woke me up with annoyed voice..."Mummy!!!"

I was not allowed to go to kitchen and cook English Full Breakfast nor Sunday Roast. As I was given a task of cooking Niku-jaga (pronounced as "Nick Jaguar"), which is a Japanese hot pot meal with meat and potatoes (We use chicken and some other vegetables, too), I managed to take the task over to my husband and run away to my kitchen.

Sorry, Daddy.
I will do the proper Daddy's Day on next Sunday.

My kids made this "Thanks, Daddy!" card.
They learnt it at Japanese Club, Brighton.
Good Job!

Oops! It should not have happened...

It's about this month's sweets, Kuzu Warabi Mochi.

I made a minor(?) mistake.
First, it did not settle. But I was hoping if the time would solve the problem...
Things got worse in the end and Mochi just stuck to everywhere...on the container and lid... such a mess.

Sorry.

I guessed I used too much water. I did retake today and it was ok. So ...

This week's Kuzu Warabi Mochi will be the best ever!

Do I say too much? Never... it's because it's true!!! haha...

I am having a large sales in July. So I have to check all the stocks now.
So much to do in so little time.... as always... :(

*********************

This year's cherry blossom was a bit later than usual, but the growth of leaves are so quick! I always buy organic cherry leaves from Lewes's Japanese vegetable supplier, Namayasai PLL, and last week they contacted me that their leaves are good to be harvested.

This year I am pickling 300 + leaves for next year's Sakuramochi.

It was a large bag full of leaves. By the time the leaves were boiled and salted, they looked so little.
In three weeks time, those leaves are ready to be used.

I am aiming to make some Sakuramochi for the Maeda Gakuen Natsumatsuri (on 13th July) in Acton, as I did not take any Sakuramochi around the area in the season this April. I hope some of you will enjoy the most popular traditional Wagashi, although it would be a bit out of season.

Please don't miss it!

*********************

My husband came back from his first business trip on Friday.

Just before he arrived, my son's patience had run out and he started turning into a crying baby.

"I wish he was here..."

As he said that in tears while he was doing his school homework, I told him,

"When your dad comes home in a few hours time, you should have finished your homework. You dad would be very proud of you!"

No, it did not work. He just got upset and locked himself up in his bedroom. So I thought I should leave him for a while.

On the other hand, my daughter had finished all her homework and working very hard on welcoming her dad.

She was so excited that she could not keep her still for any moment. w

Anyway, I try to synchronise with her mood. When she is excited, I just get myself excited in her way. Then, she would be happy. Well, I might say we excited ourselves a bit too much at that time.

Finaly, when my husband opened the front door at 7:30 pm, my son was already sleeping in his bed, and my daugher and I were exhausted by exiting ourselves too much.

"is anybody here...?"

This was the first word of my poor husband after such a long tiring business trip.
Afterwords, I celebrated his return with my special *Katsu* dinner. It was such a treat.

However, he stayed only two night with us during the weekend and flew to Germany on another business trip.

We decided to leave my daughter's welcoming sign on the wall till the time he comes back home on Friday morning.

Now...I need a trip to go somewhere alone on business. Can I book a trip to Japan by myself during the summer holiday?

Guide to the ancient country of Persia ~Part 4~

This is one of the main event of our Tehran Stay! Ta-da--!

Visiting my Japanese friend who is married with lovely Iranian husband and have three children!

Her children are similar age to mine, apart from the oldest (teenager!). We met them just once three years ago, but they played so well...so we wanted to let them meet and play again.
Well, in that way, we can talk a lot without any disturbance.

We are asked to arrive around 1:30 for lunch. My in-laws arranged a taxi, but there was a problem to get there.

As we had another invitation from another family members live in Tehran, my husband had to go to see them by himself. Therefore, I need to go to my friends house by myself with my two kids.

Of course, I don't speak Farsi. Not at all...I can say it aloud.

I CAN NOT SPEAK FARSIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

Apparently, it normally takes one hour to 90 min to get to the aria my friend lives. (My in-law's flat is in North-East part of Tehran, and my friend lives in West part of Tehran.) As I mentioned in the last blog, Tehran's driving condition is not the best.

So, we booked taxi at noon and let children have their DS to spend the long journey.

My Father in law came to taxi when we get in, he was talking the driver for a while. He gave a piece of paper which has the address of my friend's and as he was paying money, he told the driver really seriously...

"You have to make sure they go into this house. Don't go away till you see the door closed."

Setting off...very quietly. So, I tried to enjoy the view from the taxi.

It was a lovely drive..., but it was too lovely. No traffic jam at all.
In 20 minute, we stopped and I think the driver told us something like...just stay in the taxi, and left somewhere.

What? What? What?  What's happening???The time we have to ring the door bell should be one hour later...  Awwww...

I would spend one hour or so some where such as a cafe if it was in Japan or the UK.
But the taxi driver had a duty to do and he could not waste his precious time here with us. Anyway, I didn't have any linguistic skill to improve this situation.
So, we excused ourselves for the unbelievably early arrival.

The driver said good by and left us with very, very satisfied smile. Yep, he was a good man.

My friend was too lovely. After brief greeting, she explained what happened to our journey.
Normally, it would take longer than one hour. But this was the period of the New Year. Most of people has left Tehran or stay inside of house and not to go anywhere... Of course not a lot of people go to work, either. So, Tehran highway are all deserted during this period.

Anyway, I handed in all the present from the UK.
Japanese and Chinese foods, British and American snacks, toys for children, etc.etc.
They were all easily accessible in the UK, but not in Iran.

Then, finally, I handed in a hard drive to my friend.

This visit had 3 aims of mine.

1) Let children play each other.

2) Get a copy of her massive stock of Japanese books and movies.
3) Eat her special dinner! (She used to work as a chef in the kitchen of a Japanese Company in the Tehran Branch.)

The first was achieved quite easily. As soon as our youngest get on very well ... and they almost crushed my friend's house down. It reminded me of them both have brothers who play with in a rough manner. So sorry, my friend!

The second one was progressed nicely on the PC all the time during the visit. (The hard drive I took was 500 Gb!)

The third one was going to be achieved after her husband come back from his work.

Talking, chatting, playing, munching snacks, telling off children and more chatting... Time just flew.

At 7 pm, her husband came back and my husband was on the way to join us.

After a bit of silence, the first words my friends husband said was...
"I will refugee myself to downstairs (his mother's flat)."
His house was destroyed that much. Awww...So sorry, my friend's husband!!

My husband arrived safely and we started...

Teppan Yakiiiiii!

Soooo Good! We ate and chatted and ate...

It was unforgettable time for all of us. Our daughters missing each other already when they hugged and said good-bye.

We will come back...if it is OK.
Well, we have to.

It is because we forgot to take any photo of ourselves together. (as we were too busy talking and eating.)
Yes, no photo. Non. The big round 0.

The first aim of visiting them next would be taking our photos together!!!

To be continued...

Guide to the ancient country of Persia ~Part 3~

The second day in Tehran. Visiting to Hora Gaza's house.

Here is a small stock of knowledge of Persian.

There are some similarity in Persian and Japanese languages.

As Japanese has different kanji characters "aunt" or "uncle" of parent's, there are different names of "aunt" and "uncle" of mother side or farther side.

In this stay, I found out some similarity in Persian grammar, and I felt familiar to this language.
...Although, it does not mean its pronunciation is not easy... at all.

The order of structure is same. S+O+V+other additional informations.

Especially, the Subject is normally dropped off in conversations.

Festival announcement!

I have got a reply back from Maeda Gakuen.

I have given an offer to have a stall in the Summer Festival!!!

Maeda Gakuen Summer Festival
Time: Saturday 13th July 2013 11am-5pm
Place: Acton Nursery Ground
Queens Drive Playing Field, Queens Drive, Acton, W3 0HT

This will be the third attend for an-an to this event. Every time it's so popular that the festival ground is full of people.

Sushi, Bento boxes and other Japanese food, Japanese traditional dance, festival games and noodle fishing in a stream...

Sounds exciting? well, I don't know how many people can guess what they are really like with my explanation. If you are interested in, you just need to come to the event!!!

This year, we have given a theme of...

"B"Level  Gourmet

I did not know what that exact means, so I googled the words.

It means, it's not a kind of foods served in the best restaurants or anything. The food can be a street foods or first food in everyday scenes. However, it is called "Gourmet", so it has to be tasty.

According to my friend, Tamago yaki (Akashi, Hyogo, see the image below) is one of "B" Level Gourmet.
This photo is from my friend's restaurant. Thank, Yassan! If you visit Akashi, please pop in!
Its owner, who is learning to speak English right now, is waiting for you.

an-an is also asked to sell something as "B" Gourmet on top of our usual menu.

Then, I thought. If I should come up a new menu based on my hometown's "B"Gourmet, or something I come up from the characteristics of Southeastern Seaside.

I think I am going to make a sweets related to tendency of Southern towns.

Please don't miss it! It's only on this event. I can guarantee you will like it!!!

Now what I need is a good weather.
If I can see the sun in the sky on the day, it must be a good day.
